Food, Drape and Home...
Neither a million bucks,
Nor the gold in my safe.
Caresses my jittery thoughts,
Reassures my dwindling faith.
Hungry mind often wanders away,
Quelling beliefs, finding logic.
Penning looming thoughts calm the feud.
Writing serves my appetite, writing is my food.
People mocked me, they shunned me,
I felt naked, without clothes.
Sewing pride inch by inch,
Draped semi-clad body in poetry and prose.
Vagabond I am, I ride high,
In the wasted highlands, I never comply.
Be in harsh weather, be in lost dome,
Writing shelters my body, writing is my home.
Writing to me is food, drape, and home,
And I shall write, write and write.
Gold, money shall wither away,
Live life in black and white.

DeleteWriting to me is food, drape and home,
ReplyDeleteAnd I shall write, write and write.
Gold, Money shall wither away,
Live life in black and white.
Wow!! what a beautiful piece of poetry and nothing can express a true poetic heart better than this to say the least. Loved every stanza of this poem.
Hungry mind often wanders away,
Quelling beliefs, finding logic.
Penning looming thoughts calms the feud.
Writing serves my appetite, Writing is my food.
Reading this reminds me of this beautiful sher by Ghalib-
है ख़याल-ऐ-हुस्न में हुस्न-ऐ-अमल का सा ख़याल
खुल्द का एक दर है मेरी गोर के अंदर खुला
(Husn-e-amal = Good deed, Khuld = heaven, Gor = grave)
What he is trying to say is- to him thoughts of "her" is as good as good deeds. As he entered the grave, gates of heaven opened for him( as good deeds take one to heaven). So in your case Khayaal of poetry is like that too :)
That's such a soulful couplet Nihar. Writing, specially poetry is so close to me, I live, cry and feel happy in few written lines. And the best part is we can have a different interpretation each time we read it.
DeleteThanks for such a wonderful comment and sharing the couplet, along with its meaning. :)
Loved the symbolic use of love, drape and home.. good one Saru.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much :)
Deletewriting is food, shelter and clothing.. interesting take.. loved it.
ReplyDeleteread mine too. http://ratnibbles.blogspot.in/2013/02/i-write.html
Read yours, it was really beautiful. Glad you like mine :)
DeleteHmm! Writing is food, clothing and shelter - all the basic needs, Saru? Beautiful thought and beautifully expressed.
ReplyDeleteYeah, all the basic needs. Thanks for the appreciation Sir.
DeleteA great gush of emotions! Does writing really mean all that to you?
ReplyDeleteYeah, writing/reading means a lot to me. I can practically live with a book, pen and paper. :)
Deleteloved this poem Saru. :) The combination of words is magical :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Saurabh :)
DeleteMay you keep writing forever to find your happiness and be your drape food and home:) I could feel your passion through your words, Saru!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your blessings Sir :)
Delete:D
ReplyDeleteI think yours might be the only poetry my otherwise poetry-tone-deaf brain can comprehend!
Why? what happened to my poetry sirji? :(
DeleteHah! Aapki bhi achchi hai! Frankly, if the words are simple and the message is clear, the poetry has my vote.
DeleteDon't you feel a lot of folks complicate their writing to no useful effect? It is quite off-putting if you invest time reading a poem and there is no payback at the end of it...because you just didn't get what the poet was trying to say! (Only 2 reasons for that - either I am too dense, or the poet was trying to be uber cool)
Well, just my two cents. Anyway, what do I know!
@Rickie: Honestly, this is the best compliment ever. My only effort is to write poems in such a simple language that many can relate with it or read it. I always try that readers are not lost in translation. :) Thanks for reading and for a generous comment :)
Delete@Ekta: Read yours and it was a lovely read :)
Roti kapda aur makaan
ReplyDeleteyeh sab hai saru ki writing mein, meri jaan!
Loved ur interpretation and loved ur poem!!! Saru che!!!

LOL! Glad you liked it Ekta :)
DeleteAwesome! loved it.I totally agree with you when you say those lines. :)
ReplyDeleteRecently, some-one asked me if I write/blog as a 'part-time' thing and I knew I was offended. I don't know why and I didn't react. But deep down,I was offended.
Writing is a full time passion, not a part time hobby or time-pass.
Yes, writing is something with which we share our emotions. It can never be a time-pass.
DeleteOh man..An awesome piec of poetry , Saru!! Very meaningful...Just loved it!!! <3
ReplyDeletehttp://meintheblogosphere.blogspot.in/
Thanks dear :)
DeleteVery genuine lines of a passionate writer..Good luck with your pen and paper!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sindhu!
DeleteBack to read you... "Writing is food!" Loved it :) Keep writing Saru..
ReplyDeleteSomeone is Special
Glad! :)
DeleteGreat!! High on writing :)
ReplyDeleteTotally and cheers to that!
DeleteLast para was truly amazing, those four lines speaks a lot....:) Write, write and keep us all amazed with your poetry...Cheers...:)
ReplyDeleteThat applies to every blogger, just follow your passion :)
DeleteI can connect a lot to this! Absolutely loved each para, and each line. Writing is Divine! :)
ReplyDeleteNo wonder, you are a passionate writer. :)
DeleteWriting to you is Food, Drape and Home...and to me it was lke chocolate, sweet and energy booster.
ReplyDeleteKeep writing--- Loved the last stanza.
Kudos!1
That's a wonderful and tempting association. Glad you liked the concluding verse. :)
Deleteloved it... words are the nutrition we seek and relish :-)
ReplyDeleteTotally!
DeleteI can relate to those lines so very well, Saru. Writing is the only thing that has given me happiness in the recent past, I am really amazed to know what writing actually means to you. :)
ReplyDeleteTo me as well and I think reason is same to both of us.
DeleteLive life in black and white- wow...livean amazind life!
ReplyDelete:) :) :)
DeleteI had goosebumps reading this. I'm kinda passing through that phase with very little food, shelter and clothing.
ReplyDeleteThat's not a good phase but why?
DeleteTrying to reach a balance with my professional and personal life, I'm left with no time to sit back relaxed and write as I used to. Since it is for a good cause, I can't call it a bad phase. But definitely not a good phase too. I've no other choice for I've miles to go and promises to keep before I sleep. :)
DeleteSuch is life dear and when we are striving to do something better challenges are bound to come...
DeleteOne way of looking at it. Though, I agree with retaining and enjoying the simplicity.
ReplyDeleteI could really connect to it ..last four lines are really amazing ..It's surely the essence of life.. Keep writing..keep growing..
ReplyDeleteYeah, essence for all who love reading/writing. :)
DeleteThese lines-
ReplyDelete"People mocked me, they shunned me,
I felt naked, without clothes.
Sewing pride inch by inch,
Draped semi-clad body in poetry and prose."
truly represent what every blogger goes through when we start. They categorize us as philosophers, failed lovers, jobless and what not. I think, in your case, after almost 150k views and 650 followers, joke is on them!
We are still sewing :). But how little we care now ! We write for us...and for no one's approval. That's why the food analogy is so apt.
Brilliant work!
Yeah, we primarily write for ourselves and to satisfy the creative hunger. I don't know about numbers, I stay away from it but yes, every day I experience different emotions through blogging. Glad you liked it and hope you are back :)
Deleteyou've got a gift of writing good content Saru so you must utilize this gift sensibly ..!
ReplyDeleteI try Rahul! :)
DeleteWRITING...that word never felt so much proud until you penned these lines down for it :)

ReplyDeleteBeautiful.. I had read it on fb but still wanted to come and put a comment here too..
ReplyDeleteWe all have different connections with the cosmic world of writing...
Yes, we have a special connection with this form of art. Thanks for visiting Manjulika, really sweet of you :)
DeleteAhh the eternal roti kapda and makaan, the basic neccessities of mankind. The food is for the mind, the drape is for some soul and the home is for the body, writing satisfies the mind soul and the body. The poem just defines you, and the bolding of words, along with the choice of words, put it across very strongly. Writing is your air and water!
ReplyDeleteWriting is my everything and I worship reading too. How can we be good writers without being a good reader first? Isn't writing something we mellow us down in difficult times?
DeleteAmazing! I loved it, Saru:)
ReplyDeleteThank you Sir!
DeleteA story of writer well versed in a prose...great poem...loved it all the way...!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Anjan!
DeleteWow! This is one your best so far!!
ReplyDeleteGlad to liked it so much :)
Deletein difficult times a soldier uses a gun,and a writer uses a pen and they both are effective in their own way
ReplyDeleteYes, that is true and for a writer, a pen is mightier than a sword. :)
Deleteintoxicating words, last line will stay with me forever.
ReplyDeleteGlad!
DeleteIt comes through all your posts Saru-writing is your life.
ReplyDelete:) :) :)
Deletewow..now this what a writer like you can write :)...you have just summarize how we all as writer have felt or have been forced to feel in someway or the other...
ReplyDeleteThrilled to read your comment Richa. Glad you can connect with it and thanks for a generous comment :)
